A Brief History of Harrisburg, Pennsylvania
If you haven’t joined a classroom in a while, you may forget some things. Even important details, such as the local history of Harrisburg, PA.
It’s a tale that spans thousands of years, but we have a briefer version. Enjoy these quick facts about the community and how it came to be.
Before Becoming the Capital
Believe it or not, Harrisburg has been the capital of Pennsylvania since the 1800s. Before that, though, there wasn’t much else around other than bartering.
For a few thousand years, people came and went, trading what they could. It wasn’t until the French and Swedish traders came that industry shortly followed.
Pioneer John Harris left the land to his son, who named it for him. While the name was almost Louisburg, Harris’ son insisted on Harrisburg.
The Old Capital
The first thing that a capital needs is a building for legislators. Unfortunately, the original one burned down shortly after its construction.
In the meantime, a new one was getting built, but a new threat loomed. By 1963, the invading Confederate forces already targeted the area.
Thankfully, General Lee got forced to divide his troops and resources. As a result, the Confederates retreated, while the Gettysburg Conflict sped towards its end.

A New Capital Building
Despite setbacks and even fraud, the new capital finished construction by 1906. In the process, both the architect and lead contractors received prison sentences. During this time, the city focused on industrialization and growing the economy. From that push came new railroads, shipping, and fabrication mills.
Agriculture also saw lots of improvements as well until the 1950s. By then, many regions felt the effects of the recession before the end of WWII.
